Our Mission

Since 1974, Julie’s Family Learning Program has been dedicated to empowering mothers to recognize their strengths and utilize their know-how to stabilize and transform their family life. In 2019, Julie’s expanded its mission to all underserved learners, 16 years and older, who seek flexible opportunities to attain the educational credentials and workplace skills crucial to meeting their life goals.

Family Development Program

Julie’s Family Development Program serves mothers and their young children through a unique multigenerational approach to family development. All adult participants are mothers who are determined to be both effective parents and to reach their own learning goals, in particular securing their high school diploma through the HiSET or GED test.

Adult Basic Education (ABE) Program

Julie’s ABE Program serves adult learners of all genders who are interested in academic classes targeted towards earning a high school credential, and who can dedicate up to 10 hours a week/ 2 hours a day towards this goal. Four levels of instruction are offered mornings and evenings both in-person and online to accommodate work schedules and other time commitments.

Adult Tutor Volunteer Role

Tutors work one-on-one or in small groups with adult learners on their basic reading and writing, tech and/or math skills. The majority of learners are between a 3rd and 6th grade reading level. Classroom teachers and staff support volunteers with materials and activities for tutoring.

No teaching experience or academic expertise is necessary but an enthusiasm for connecting with learners and the ability to motivate and engage students is essential. Adult learners attend classes Monday-Thursday 9:30AM-2PM or 6-8PM and tutoring occurs on-site or remotely during those hours. Tutors usually serve 1-2 hours per week.
